Energy

Conducting research on renewable energy generations through laboratory experiments and computational modeling.

The Environment

Pursuing environmental friendly systems by assessing carbon footprints through field testing and index-based computational calculations.

Social Systems

Ensuring sustainable business models for renewable energies and environmental systems by simulating their impacts to social systems.

Welcome to Dowaki Lab!

The Laboratory is one of Japan’s leading research groups on biomass gasification. First established in April, 2006, our research group studies environmental friendly energy systems from the viewpoints of analytical systems engineering. Led by Prof. Kiyoshi Dowaki as our laboratory head, we focus on the biomass gasification process of Blue Tower. Besides, additional advanced technologies and their systems derivations are considered in order to realize them in both domestic areas and/or foreign countries. For our purpose, we execute basic chemical experiments through laboratory activities and computational process simulator (AspenTech, etc.) by applying environmental analyses based on LCA methodologies, economic analyses, and estimate optimized systems based on practical constraints (GAMS). In addition, we implement questionnaires for users in order to ensure a more practically functioning system with fitted technological appropriateness by estimating customer behaviors. These studies would contribute to the creation of sustainable business models. Then, we have also been establishing collaborations with companies, public groups, and/or foreign organizations, to promote our proposed systems.

Research

Our research agenda is built around the three general research interests of this laboratory (energy science, environmental engineering, and social systems modeling) in collaboration with industrial partners and international counterparts.

Dr. Kiyoshi Dowaki

Professor of Environmental Engineering

Department of Industrial Administration, Faculty of Science and Technology,
Tokyo University of Science (東京理科大学)

Biography

Dr. Kiyoshi Dowaki obtained a Doctor of Engineering degree from the Department of Geosystem Engineering, the University of Tokyo, Japan. His general research and teaching interests include energy science, environmental engineering, and social systems modeling, based on which he has been actively conducting activities through the 4E framework (Energy, Environment, Economic, and Education). As a devout environmental engineer, he has a long history of tying his research activities to collaborate with industrial clients and to inform policy makers by following an Academic-Business-Government scheme. It is his commitment to maintain a Triple-Helix scheme as such to serve the greater good for the society.
